About The Red Lion
A warm welcome awaits in the heart of the Cotswolds
History and character
Originally built as a coaching inn in 1748, The Red Lion is a Grade II listed free house, located on the northern edge of the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A picturesque and thriving contemporary rural community, Long Compton offers its own distinct breed of Cotswold charm.
Located just down the hill from the Rollright Stones, a prehistoric stone circle steeped in legend, Long Compton intrigues visitors with tales of Civil War ruin and local witchcraft. A popular destination for historians conducting research and tourists looking for the perfect Insta pic of the much-photographed lychgate at St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Long Compton is easily accessible by road. Located on the main route between Stratford Upon Avon and Oxford, it’s just 50 minutes drive from Birmingham and around 2 hours drive from central London.
A few words from your hosts at The Red Lion
We have been managing The Red Lion since 2004 and, at the end of 2023, we took over the lease and are now running it ourselves. When we first came here as managers, we only planned to stay for a couple of years, but there is something special about Long Compton and The Red Lion that makes us very reluctant to attempt recreating what we have here elsewhere.
The pub has seen many changes over the years, but it retains the charm and character of a classic Cotswold country inn. Together with our staff, we have created a unique ambience, which honours the history and character of the building but incorporates luxurious contemporary features, so that you can relax in comfort while you are here.
Whether you’re joining us for a leisurely Sunday lunch, exploring the Cotswolds over a long weekend or popping in to join us for one of our quiz nights, you can rest assured we’ll do everything we can to make you feel right at home.
We hope to see you soon,
Sarah, Lisa and Bella the pub dog

For Dogs
We love dogs and your four-legged friends are always welcome to join you for your visit.
Whether you're popping in for drinks, a bite to eat, or staying the night; there's plenty of fuss and treats for pooches at The Red Lion. We may even ask if we can feature your dog as one of our weekly #WoofWednesday stars on our Facebook page.
If you book a stay at The Red Lion with your dog, we will ensure that they feel as welcome as you do, with their own dog bowl, towel and mat to use during their stay. We also serve a menu for dogs in the restaurant and have created a guide to local dog-related services that may be of interest during your stay.

For Families
It’s not all about dogs, we love welcoming families to The Red Lion too!
We serve a popular children’s menu that is printed with an activity sheet on the back, to keep little ones amused while they wait for their food. We also have a spacious garden and a children’s playground, for any kids who want to let off steam in the great outdoors during their visit.
Our triple room, Rosie, is perfect for family stays and can be configured as three singles or a super king and a single. We are also able to provide a travel cot and baby bath for anyone travelling with an infant.

For Teens and ‘Big Kids’
With a big playground in the garden and an indoor games room, there is entertainment available for the whole family.
Home to a pool table, dart board and TV (which shows popular sporting fixtures, such as the Six Nations, the World Cup and Wimbledon), our newly redecorated games room will keep 'big kids' entertained for hours.
